About Missouri Western State University

Missouri Western State University is a public, co-educational university located in Saint Joseph, informally called Joe Town or St. Joe, which is the county seat for Buchanan County and the largest city in northwest Missouri, having a population estimated at a number of more than 76 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which also makes it the eighth largest city in the state.

Missouri Western State University was established in 1915, first starting as a two-year institution called St. Joseph Junior College, which became a four-year school in 1969, the institution adopting its current name in 2005. The university currently has an enrollment estimated at a number of nearly 6000 students, and it offers various educational programs, in numerous fields of study.

Athletics

Missouri Western State's athletic teams are known as the Griffons, who compete in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, in NCAA Division II, in 10 sports, for both men and women, including in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.
